Pokemon Go guide – How to beat Giovanni Shadow Lugia

Giovanni Shadow Lugia

Giovanni is back in Pokémon Go and he’s brought his Shadow Lugia with him. Our Pokémon Go Shadow Lugia guide details how to find Giovanni, defeat him, and capture Giovanni Shadow Lugia.

Giovanni Shadow Lugia Location

Giovanni Shadow Lugia

To find Team Go’s Rocket boss, you’ll need to use the Super Rocket Radar. You can get one by taking out Team Go Rocket leaders, but notably, one is available from step 15 of the Naughty Naughty Special Research questline right now.

Once you have the Super Rocket Radar, Giovanni will start appearing at the Poké Stop and in the team of Rocket Balloons that fly past you.

Beat Giovanni Shadow Lugia

The most common strategy used to take down Giovanni Shadow Lugia is to use a high CP Machamp with Counter and Dynamic Punch. This will deal super-effective damage to his Persia, and it will quickly accumulate your move bar. Use attacks as soon as possible to escape Giovanni’s two shields. Then just blow him up with your strongest Pokémon to stop him.

However, a lot of Giovanni’s fights are trial and error, depending on what kind of Pokémon you have. If you don’t beat him, take note of when you lose and adjust your team accordingly.

Team And Counters

When you find Giovanni, brace yourself for a fight. His Pokémon is a lot stronger than the previous Go Rocket Team Captains you’ve fought, so make sure your team is just as strong.

Giovanni’s choice of Legendary Pokémon and second-party membership rotates monthly, meaning you’ll often find yourself battling different Pokémon.

This time, Giovanni will always use the following:

  • Persian
  • Kingler
  • Shadow Lugia

We recommend the counters below, although you don’t have to use these Pokémon to win. Just make sure you take advantage of the type.

Persian Counters

Persian is a normal type, making it vulnerable to battle-type Pokémon. We recommend any of the below:

  • Machamp with Counter and the Dynamic Punch
  • Lucario with Counter and the Power-Up Punch
  • Tyranitar with SmackDown and the Crunch

Kingler Counters

Kingler is weak against the grass and electric attacks. Our recommend:

  • Zapdos with Thunder Shock and the Thunderbolt
  • Roserade with Razor Leaf and the Grass Knot
  • Electivire with Thunder Shock and the Wild Charge

Rhyperior Counters

Giovanni Shadow Lugia

Rhyperior is weak against teamfights, ground, steel, and ice. It’s four times weaker than water and grass types, so you should definitely take advantage of any of the following:

  • Roserade with Razor Leaf and the Grass Knot
  • Kyogre with Waterfalls and Surfing
  • Swamp with Water Gun and Hydraulic Cannon

Nidoking Counters

Nidoking is weak against ground, water, psychic, and ice moves. Our recommend:

  • Kyogre with Waterfalls and Surfing
  • Garchomp with Mud Shooting and Earth Power
  • Mamoswine with Snow Powder and the Avalanche

Lugia Counters

Lugia is weak against kick-, ghost-, electric-, ice- and shadow attacks. Here are some great counter examples for you:

  • Mamoswine with Snow Powder and the Avalanche
  • Rhyperior with SmackDown and the Rock Wrecker
  • Tyranitar with SmackDown and the Stone Edge

How often to fight Giovanni Shadow Lugia

Giovanni Shadow Lugia

Each calendar month you will receive a new Giovanni Special Research quest that will be performed at midnight on the first day of each month.

This will give you a Super Rocket Radar, a reliable way to battle Giovanni at least once a month, with the possibility of catching another Legendary Pokémon.

Catch Giovanni Shadow Lugia

After defeating Giovanni, you will have a chance to grab Shadow Lugia. Shadow Lugia will be guaranteed to catch as long as you land a ball, so make sure to use Pinap Berries to increase the amount of Lugia Candy you will get from the catch.
