There are two possible realities at this point. You’re playing Loop Hero right now or you’re avoiding it. Four Quarters’ never-ending roguelike game has taken Steam by storm, and many fans of the genre have flocked to the game, only to find that it’s more than just a human-like game. The game mixes a lot of different genres, giving you a deck of cards, item building considerations, a set of recurring building projects, and a healthy, candid conversation. It’s hard, but with some tips and tricks, you’ll be off to a much better start.
Don’t Swap Items Out
We made this mistake so many times in our first few runs before we realized why we died so easily. You can easily see the shiny, new swords and shields you get in Loop Hero and think “the higher the number, the better they have to be!” While that may be true in some cases, it is more important to create a unique character by equipping armor and weapons that suit your playstyle.
Curate A Suitable Build – Loop Hero
Pause and see the statistics of the items you receive. You might see a Level 8 ring with extra magic damage, but your Level 5 ring provides 3.0 Regeneration per second and that can be more valuable if your build is focused on survival. On the other hand, don’t be afraid to kill your darling. If you already have a level 8 Shield with no extra effects and then you find a rare level 5 Shield with lots of extras, you might want to swap if it suits your build better. Specifically, think about what your next fight will be like and base your items on that.
Create Structures With Cards
In Loop Hero, when you put certain cards side by side, you can create combinations that create new effects. For example, if a Vampire House is placed next to a Village, the Village will eventually be ransacked and turned into a new property after a few rounds, providing the player with health and quests as they go through.
Likewise, a 3 × 3 square of the ‘Rock’ card will create a mountain range that grants additional summoner spells but can also summon Harpies. The most basic of these combinations is to place a Prairie adjacent to any other structure, which turns it into a Blooming Meadow and increases its healing power.
You should figure out some of these combinations yourself, but you should definitely check out the game’s Steam guide to learn more.
Don’t Push Yourself Too Hard – Loop Hero
One of the easiest mistakes you can make is putting all your cards down as soon as you get them. This means tons of enemies will appear and you will clog your loop with mobs trying to make your life hell. If you don’t get any lanterns to reduce the spawn rate, you’ll quickly get overwhelmed and run away.
As it turns out, the game will reward you with resources if you have many cards that the deck is forced to clear, so consider keeping your loop fairly quiet as you look to play Loop Hero. Place a few structures and spawn mobs to create an unmanageable curve as you approach the boss and rush out if you don’t think you can take them down.
