Teamfight Tactics: How to Make the Best Carousel Picks

Sometimes you may feel like you are in a circus with TFT’s shared draft. Little creatures running around dragging champions and items around… everyone else spins in a circle. It is quite confusing. Don’t worry, we’re here to help you figure out what you should be looking for and maximize your spins without losing your cool. Below is how to make the best Carousel Picks.

The Starting Carousel Round

This is probably the most defining thing. Everyone starts from scratch and at the same time. There are obvious things you should be looking for: Aim for 2 units of cost unless you can get a Recovery Supply from a unit of cost. Another reason for choosing a unit of price 1 might be if the other 2 price units have the worst items on them (Pendant and Black Cloaks). If that’s the case, choose any 2 cost units for a decent item.

How to prioritize items in the first carousel:

  • Recurve Bow
  • Spatula
  • Tear of the Goddess
  • Needlessly Large Rod
  • B.F. Sword
  • Giant’s Belt
  • Negatron Cloak
  • Chain Vest

These are the items you want to make at the early game:

Rageblade: Great with Nidalee (add Warwick for the Wild combo), Vayne, or even Tristana if you’re desperate.

Statikk Shiv: Better early game item than Rage Blade, slightly weaker late game. Great with Nidalee, Vayne, Tristana, and Lucian.

Spear of Shojin: Can be used early on for Kha’Zix, Darius, Ahri, or any magic-based carry. Late game, it’s great for caster, assassin and even Ashe builds (using Ashe as a stun bot in the ranger team).

Bloodthirster: Great item to build but only if you’ve got a carry like Nidalee or Vayne with an ATK speed item. If you craft this item, you need to carefully consider using a DPS AD for a single target as your item (Draven, Nidalee, Vayne, etc.)

Rabadon’s Deathcap: Only possible if you have Spear of Shojin in people like Ahri.

Rapid Firecannon: A must-have on 3-star Nidalee, it’s a good replacement for Guinso in all hyper carry builds if needed. For example, if you hit 3 Recurve Bows early, you could create an RFC instead of Guinsoo, even if you’re planning on playing an A-Sol collection. Instead of using your first Big Stick to make a Guinsoo, you can craft a Rabadon or Hextech instead.

Zephyr: Try to hold the Giant’s Belt to get Zeke and Negatron Cloak for Blood Thirster (if you have AD). Normally, you should only craft this item if you have a 2nd Belt / Cloak or want to maintain a winning streak. If you place the bottom left Zephyr, it will CC units in the top right corner. Keep that in mind when you decide which units get Zephyr.

Later Carousel Rounds

Your goal will change in later shared draft rounds as you begin to reinforce your composition and know what you want to do. In a sense, maybe the first to be relieved and not worrying about making too many choices, but that’s the purpose of this article: to help you make the best choices. Let’s break down each one:

Carousel Round 2:

In this draft, you may still be looking for the exact items to complete your first set of basic elements. This is necessary to create the combo items you need to make your composition powerful. At this point in the game, there are no units worth thinking about getting an item you need.

Carousel Round 3:

4 main cost units like Draven, Brand, and Aurelion Sol join the group. Occasionally a legendary unit will appear and in rare cases, a completed item will be accompanied by a champion.
