Udyr, the spirit walker, was recently picked in the LCK match. He was picked by DRX Hong “Pyosik” Chang-hyeon in the second match against Nongshim RedForce.
Within almost 1,800 days, Pyosik gave Udyr its first appearance in pro legend. He also handed the champion its first victory of the season.
Is Udyr meta in LCK match ?
Lately, the champion has not been mentioned as a potential pick in the LCK, or the meta of any other league for that matter. But the champion does check a lot of boxes that the current meta jungler picks do.
In the jungle, he has a decent clear speed, which is great for outpacing your opponent who may be more inclined to ganking on a champion, and Udyr has amazing chase potential in team fights. With the mythical item of the Turbo Chem Tank, Udyr can easily chase and slow opponents while also accruing health and magical resistance.
Udyr has some drawbacks in a professional match. The champion does not have great objective control at an early stage, and this was highlighted in the match against Nogshim RedForce.
In the first 15 minutes, Pyosik claimed only one neutral objective, generating a lot of early pressure to the opposite Nidalee.
Pyosik frequently tried to gank for his top laner, but failed several times due to the enemy flashing and using escape tools on Gnar, the champion also has a hard time ganking lanes.
Pyosik explains why Udyr was picked
In an interview, Pyosik explained that Udyr could operate within the current meta and that, regardless of the previous outcome, the plan was to always bring out the champion in the second game.
He also played the champion with marginal success in solo queue and recently put it into scrims where it saw sufficient positive results to warrant a selection in a professional match.
He highlighted the high speed of movement of the champion and his ease of play, even at a professional level. He said that in the future, fans should expect to see the champion more.
