Valkyria Chronicles 4 Guide – Tips Beginners Should Know

Valkyria Chronicles 4

For many people, Valkyria Chronicles 4 could be their first foray into the franchise. Thankfully, it’s actually designed to support that, with a storyline that runs parallel to the original game. But for newcomers, there is still a lot to learn about the actual mechanics. The game’s tutorial does a great job at your job, but there’s a lot we wish we knew when we started.

Bring A Medic

Valkyria Chronicles 4

Valkyria Chronicles 4 has long. Serious. Your best sniper is dead and they can be gone for the rest of the game.

Medicines are expected to be terrible in battle, but they can revive players that have been knocked down with low health, bringing them back from the brink. They are also good at killing wounded soldiers, making them a great addition to your second wave. Just be aware that you’ll only have a few turns for the medical to reach a dying soldier before they kick, so be aware of the placement.

If you’re really worried about making a permanent mistake, remember that you can save every turn. Unlike Fire Emblem, which requires you to restart the battle from scratch, the game is much more forgiving. So if you can’t stand the loss, save the scum for your heart.

Snipers Are Al-stars – Valkyria Chronicles 4

There are many useful units on the battlefield, but none are better than snipers. As you would imagine, they can attack at bad ranges, dealing critical damage as long as they can get the right angle to shoot in the head. Even overhead mortars and enemy snipers are often not up to your eye, so keep them safe and handy.

The downside of using snipers is their ability to carry ammo. Basically, they can only fire a few shots before needing to refill supplies. That’s where the engineers come in. These units can fill the ammo reserves of skilled units at will, so pairing an engineer with a sniper is always a good tactic. You can always send the engineer on a one-way trip to fill up the other soldiers, but you’ll want them back next to the previous sniper for too long.

Keeping Friends Together – Valkyria Chronicles 4

Keep track of your unit listings. It’s easy to miss, but you’ll really be able to tell which units like each other. If you put a duo side by side in battle, you’ll sometimes see them perform double attacks, increasing their collective damage. For example, sniper Kai likes Riley and Raz, so make sure you keep them close. This isn’t Fire Emblem Awakening, though, so don’t expect time-traveling super babies to show up and join your team anytime soon.

Use Heroes Often

Valkyria Chronicles 4

Even if you don’t plan on using one of the main heroes on a quest, you should take them with you. As you’ll quickly learn, CP (Battle Points) is life in Valkyria Chronicles 4. Meaning it gives you more moves per turn.

Letting a hero go on a quest increases your total CP, but if they manage to get knocked out, you’ll lose that CP boost, which can be pretty crippling.

So if they are one of the more fragile heroes, just keep them in the backline. You’ll get a CP boost no matter where they are, and you won’t have to worry about them getting plugged in.

Interesting side note: Enemies will have their own set of heroes. Taking those heroes out will actually remove CP from the enemy tally, making them less likely to turn the tables. So if you have the option, aim for these enemy champions first.
